1. Bus Driver(s)

Scott has actively been talking with potential bus drivers.  He had an interview with one today that may be used.  Previously, he talked with a couple of ladies from Kokomo who are interested.  One is only able to help out on Saturdays.  The newspaper article was helpful in getting some of those responses.

We also have an evolving issue with one bus driver with medical issues.  We feel we are needing to force the issue with the driver for the safety of the students.  The driver has not been on the route for a couple of weeks.  We have double-up the route, putting the students on two other buses.  That has worked well and we are looking to make it a permanent change - eliminating the one route.  That will be dependent on how things go with the driver with the medical condition whether we will have a conversation with her next week.

Related to that, the drivers have been extremely helpful in meeting the challenges of providing transportation for the students. Once the crisis was minimized, one of the corporation drivers felt she should receive additional compensation for taking on more students.  We equate it with that this could have happened over the summer and no one would have noticed that difference.  Having it happen after school started gave the perception of creating  a "new entity."  Drivers are paid to drive a route - whether they have 2 kids or 42 kids.  She does not feel it is fair and she may resign.

Scott has been riding each route.  We will be sitting down and looking at the pay structure for all drivers trying to make it fair among them and competitive with other schools.

2. Wages/Pay Scale

2.1 Sub Bus Drivers

Are regular sub drivers are seeking better pay.  Currently, they make $30/run (AM or PM) and $50/day.  In checking with other area schools, we are low.  With five area schools responding, the daily rate ranges from $67/day to $76/day.

We would propose raising the substitute bus driver pay to $70/day, which is the average of these area schools. This would be effective upon approval by the board.

We would also propose that if a substitute driver is assigned to one route for more than three weeks, their sub pay would increase to $85/day while dring that route.

In the meantime, we will simplify the sub pay and make the daily rate $60/day or $30/run.

2.2 Tech Assistant

Mr. Witherow is making a request that the Technology Assistant, Tammie Irmeger, pay be adjusted. She was hired as a Tech Assistant at the instructional assistant rate of pay - $10.50/hour for 194 days Brian feels that her skills and the level of assistance she provides warrants consideration for additional compensation.  He is concerned that we might lose her to someone willing to pay more.  He had hoped to get her to around $25,000 to $30,000.

Steven Gingerich was hired as an Assistant Technology Director.  With that, he has a variety of certification and training that matches that role.  He is currently making around $31,000 for 224 days.

In giving consideration to the request, I have offered to take Tammie to $12.50/hour for 214 days. That would take her annual salary from $15,629 ($10.70/hr) to $20,062.  This would be effective with the next immediate payroll period following board action.

2.3 All Others

For whatever reason, there has been a number of people approach me about pay adjustments.  I am not inclined to have individual negotiations as what is done with one, others will be looking for similar consideration.  They all feel they are valuable.,  I feel they are ALL valuable and we have to treat them equitably with their peers.

And of course, what is coming out of the community groups is that we need to pay a fair and competitive wage to attract the best pool of candidates.

This is something we will need to look at moving forward into the next school year.

3. Supplemental Contracts for Administrators

Supplemental contracts for all administrators is something we have been looking at this year - especially since this is the first time since my hiring that we have had to hire new administrators.  The supplemental contract simply outlines what is agreed to with the various administrators.  This will help to clarify for them, what they are signing on for, especially with benefits, and document for us.

The attached is a supplemental contract modeled after what is used for my contract.  Some modification would be made as indicated on the attached document.  Using this does not change anything that is currently offered. It simply puts in writing what we are already doing.
