Business Affairs Advisory Committee

1. School Calendar 2020-2021

Four options are presented for consideration and discussion.  The major differences with these options are the starting dates and the subsequent number of days per semester:

  • Option 1 provides corresponding dates with the 2019-2020 calendar with a starting date the second week of August.  This would have students reporting on Friday, August 14.  An issue with this option is that the semesters are not well balanced – 84 days and 96 days.  In the past, trying to keep the end of the 1st semester before the winter break is a goal while also trying to keep the number of day in each semester close to one another.  This would not happen with this option.
  • Option 2 provides an earlier start but would be a mid-week start.  This is in line with the starting dates of calendars already established by two  KASEC schools (Western and Taylor).   It moves away from a Friday start for students and moves the start to a Wednesday.  The semesters are more balanced at 86 and 94
  • Option 3 moves the start date up even earlier with students reporting on Monday, August 10 for a full week.  This earlier start would give an even more balance to the semester at  88 and 92 days.
  • Option 4 goes back to a Friday start but a week earlier – August  7.  The semesters would be even more balanced at 89 and 91 days, only gaining one day in the first semester.

2. Openness of Board Items

There has been some discussion from the public about providing more information to them, specifically, the attachments that are provided in the board's agenda.  How much and what information should be made widely available to the public?

3. Transportation
  • New Position - Hinds Career Center Bus Route.  We are recommending that a new bus route, and this a new position, be created for the purpose of providing transportation of students for Tipton High School to the Hinds Career Center in Elwood.  This would be effective with the 2019-2020 second semester.
  • Bus Replacement.  We feel there is a need to purchase a new bus for 2020.  However, there would be a recommended change to the plan as was proposed - replacing Bus 30 rather than Bus 45.  The Bus Replacement Plan also called for the replacement of Activity Bus A-4.  With 140,00 miles on it, we would like to keep with our plan and replace it.  However, there seems to be a reluctance to rep[lace buses.  It is felt it could be used one more year but that could back up the overall plan for future years.
  • Office Status/Personnel.  Additional changes have brought about a need to adjust the pay of Robin Parr.  The job description would remain the same as has been adjusted, but considerations are being made for the time she may be called upon to drive a bus, which goes beyond secretarial skills.

4. Mowing Recommendations

It is being recommended that we continue with contracting mowing services out. Attached is the proposed process.

5. School Safety
  • Schools have been conducting their regular drills this semester.  Under Indiana law (new), schools are to conduct Active Shooter Drills within the first 90 days of school.  The high school has completed their and plans are being made to conduct drills at the elementary and middle schools.
  • Principals have been attending the Safe School Academy for certification.  Melissa and Caylie have been getting their initial certification.  Brett, Craig, Lori, and Shayne attended the 2-day required advanced trainings in September.  Others will attend advance training during regional training or the Safe School Academy in May.
  • TCSC (and Tri-Central) received grant from the Tipton County Foundation for the purchase of School Guard, or Guard 911.  The grant covered the initial setup cost of $1938.  There will be an annual cost to maintain the system for $1188. We are working to get the system operational.
